Algeria signs cooperation agreement with Soviet Union. O 1988 Violence directed at ruling party. State of emergency. Algeria negotiates release of Kuwaiti hostages held on aircraft by Shi'a gunmen. The hijackers escape unpunished. 0 1989 Constitutional reforms, which diminish power of FLN. New political parties are founded, including the Islamic Salvation Front (FIS). The Arab Maghreb Union is established by the leaders of Algeria, Libya, Morocco and Tunisia. 0 1990 Political exiles permitted to return home. FIS wins municipal elections. 1991 FIS leaders Abassi Madani and Ali Belhadj arrested. FIS wins large majority in National Assembly. 0 1992 Bendjedid overthrown by military. Second round of elections scrapped. President Boudiaf assassinated. Succeeded by Ali Kafi. FIS leaders Abassi Madani and Ali Belhadj given 12 years in jail. O 1994 Political violence led by Armed Islamic Group.
